Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Agriculture Minister, has announced his plan to pursue the flagbearer role for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 elections.
Speaking after a meeting with leaders of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dr. Acheampong said an exploratory team conducted a one-month survey among party delegates. Based on the results, he has decided to officially enter the race once nominations open.

He explained:
“A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations… as a product of the church, it would be a disappointment… if the moderator of the church hears it for the first time on the radio”.
The church leaders also prayed for and encouraged him in his campaign.

Dr. Acheampong’s campaign team—led by MP Andy Appiah‑Kubi—says they are already working behind the scenes to build support. They believe his four terms in parliament have given him strong experience against other contenders . Appiah‑Kubi added:
“We are getting ready to win. We have started the race, and we will definitely win—and win well”.
The NPP plans to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, to choose its 2028 candidate. Other likely candidates include former Vice‑President Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
