Ablekuma North Elections: Akua Afriyie Says “No” to Rerun

Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for Ablekuma North, has firmly refused the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to re-run the parliamentary vote in 19 polling stations. The EC announced this rerun after concerns arose about the accuracy of the December 7, 2024 election results.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on July 2, she said she’s very disappointed. According to her, the vote counting was almost finished—only three of the 19 polling stations had not been declared  . She added that the Commission itself told Parliament under oath that just three stations remained. So, she questions why a rerun is suddenly needed now.

Afriyie also suggested that the opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), might be pushing for the rerun to gain an unfair edge.

“We will not accept this decision,” she said. “All collation was done, except those three stations. What changed?”

The NDC and the EC have yet to respond directly. But this disagreement raises tension over how transparent and fair the process is. Since Ablekuma North has long been an NPP stronghold, the outcome carries weight for both parties. With national elections on the horizon, the EC’s decision and any reactions from political groups will be watched closely.

Why It Matters

  • Timing concerns: Collation nearly finished, so why rerun?
  • Trust in the EC: Is the Electoral Commission acting fairly?
  • Political stakes: Ablekuma North is a key constituency ahead of bigger polls.
