Police Launch Raid on Illegal Miners in Asenanyo Forest Reserve

The Ghana Police Service has launched a major operation targeting illegal mining activities in the Asenanyo Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region.

The raid, which took place earlier this week, involved a joint task force of police officers, forest guards, and national security operatives. The team stormed several sites deep inside the reserve, where illegal miners had set up camp and were actively engaging in “galamsey” (illegal small-scale mining).

⛏️ Massive Destruction Discovered

According to the police, the operation uncovered extensive environmental damage. Parts of the forest had been destroyed, and rivers were heavily polluted with mining waste.

Over ten excavators and dozens of pieces of mining equipment were confiscated or destroyed on-site to prevent further operations.

🚔 Arrests Made

During the raid, several illegal miners fled the scene, but the task force managed to arrest some suspects who are now in police custody. Investigations are ongoing, and the authorities say more arrests are expected in the coming days.

The Forestry Commission confirmed that the Asenanyo Forest Reserve is a protected area and mining of any kind is strictly forbidden there.

🗣️ Government’s Warning to Illegal Miners

The operation is part of a renewed national effort to clamp down on illegal mining, especially in forest reserves and near water bodies.

Officials say they will not hesitate to use force to protect the environment if necessary.

“We must protect our forests and water sources for future generations,” said one security official involved in the raid.
