Two Top Ghanaian Clubs Get Transfer Bans Over GH₵750,000 Debt

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has banned two prominent Ghana Premier League clubs from signing new players because of unpaid debts totaling GH₵750,000.

Legon Cities

  • Owes former player Francis Nuer Addo GH₵29,000 for salary and benefits from October 2021 to October 2022.
  • The club failed to meet three scheduled payment deadlines in December 2024, January 2025, and February 23, 2025.
  • This triggered an automatic transfer ban for the 2025/26 season.

Addo criticised the GFA for being slow to act, saying the delayed enforcement “undermines the league’s integrity” and may scare off sponsors.

Hearts of Oak

  • Owes New Edubiase United an estimated $70,000 (~GH₵721,000) related to midfielder Salim Adams’ transfer.
  • A GFA Players’ Status Committee decision required Hearts to pay $50,000 for his transfer and $20,000 from a future transfer fee  .
  • After missing the May 31, 2025 deadline—even following a March 2025 meeting and a GH₵5,000 fine—they received a transfer ban under Article 15(1)(c) of the GFA Disciplinary Code  .

Hearts reportedly asked New Edubiase to cancel part of the debt due to a failed transfer to FC Cincinnati, but did not fully meet conditions for that arrangement.

What Happens Next?

Both clubs must pay their debts in full before they can register any new players, whether in Ghana or abroad. This ban could seriously hurt their team-building plans and performance.
