Hearts of Oak Celebrate Homowo Cup Triumph with Solid Win Over Heart of Lions

Accra Hearts of Oak emerged triumphant in the 2025 Gbese Mantse Homowo Charity Cup, defeating Heart of Lions 2-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday evening in a match that combined deep respect with skillful play.

Before play began, both teams and their supporters observed a minute of silence to honour the victims of a recent helicopter crash that claimed the lives of several Ghanaians, showing that sport and sorrow can go hand in hand.

The game started with energy on both sides. The Heart of Lions came close to scoring early when Kwadwo Obeng Jr threaded a pass to Seedorf Asante, but Asante could not turn the opportunity into a goal in a one-on-one duel with Hearts’ goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

Hearts answered strongly, with Francis Duku sending in dangerous crosses and nearly scoring himself, but was thwarted by a fine save from Lions’ keeper Jason Nettey.

Hearts broke the deadlock just before halftime, thanks to their new signing, Frank Duku, who reacted swiftly from a close-range rebound to give his side the edge  . Moments later, Hamza Issah added a second, calmly chipping the ball over the keeper to make it 2-0 heading into the half.

The second half saw Hearts pushing for a third goal. Both Duku and Issah came close, but neither found the net. In turn, the Lions tested Hearts’ defence through Atta Agyei, whose cross-shot narrowly missed the post  . At full time, Hearts of Oak held onto their 2-0 lead and lifted the prestigious Gbese Mantse Homowo Cup.

This victory builds confidence as both clubs look forward to the GHALCA Top Four tournament, beginning Wednesday, 20 August 2025, which will serve as final preparation before the new season launches in September.

Under coach Didi Dramani, Hearts of Oak will aim for a strong campaign in the Ghana Premier League, while Heart of Lions will seek to build momentum and secure their place in the top tier next season.

The match also held ceremonial importance, being played in honour of the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, and attended by noted dignitaries such as the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, and Hearts of Oak board member Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe.

By blending heartfelt respect for recent national loss with spirited competition and noteworthy club narratives, this article highlights both the emotional weight and athletic excellence of the match.
